I logged in to Alexa.com and was pelasantly amused (yup, that’s my way of describing it) to see that Alexa is giving away the list of Top One Million Sites for free. How cool is that.
Alexa which was selling the product for Thousand of dollars suddenly turned goodie-goodie and decided to give the contents for free. Its a CSV file amounting to around 10 Megabytes.
Grab it before they decide to change their minds. Click here to download or head over to Alexa.com
A Quick Analysis
The sad news is that, the file only has the Rank and Name of the sites. A few other details like estimated traffic, demographics of visitors etc. would have been much better offering. But hey, whose complaining?
A Quick look at the top 30 sites reveal the following
- 8 out of 30 are sites which lets its users contribute or share in someway
- Blogger and WordPress.com both feature in it
- 11 site from Google stable, 2 from Yahoo and 3 from Microsoft
- Youtube, Facebook and MySpace all in top 10
I will dedicate a post sometime later on how to use this to your benefit.
Happy New Year and Have a nice day..!!

It’s interesting to hear that both Blogger and WordPress.com blogs appear on the list. I’m curious, but I don’t quite feel like downloading the list today.
Javier – If you don’t feel like downloading, I wrote a web based tool to search the entire file using just a browser.
The data is pretty interesting. In addition to checking on competitors, it’s possible to get a list of top trafficked domains using each domain extension.
For example, I found…
565,805 using .com
70,640 using .net
48,810 using .org
13,135 using .info
3939 using .biz
3628 using .tv
3107 using .eu
227 using .mobi
If you would like to try the tool out, the url is:
