People easily panic when they see their sites getting deindexed by Big Daddy Google. Now deindexed can be of two kinds:
-
Completed Deindexing
-
Partial Deindexing
Complete Deindexing means losing over 80% to 100% of your pages, while partial refers to 20-50%.

Some twitch in the Google Algorithm
Google has tonnes of data to reload and apply their algorithm. So it is not surprising cases like these happening. But mostly it gets sorted once they find and recover the glitch. And they are pretty good in doing the repair job. After all its their main bread and butter business to provide fair search results to end users.
-
Pages filled with Spam
-
Less quality pages, grammatical and spelling errors, misspelled words
-
Pages with large amount of duplicate content
-
Too many stuffed keyword to confuse Google to categorize your page
In such cases mostly you are losing up only pages that are of low quality and not worthy to Google and ultimately your visitors.
Complete Deindexing
-
Cloaking and misguiding Google bots
-
Genuine Error
Google hates Black Hat SEO techniques. Reason,it makes their search algorithm worthless. So it does not hesitate banning sites that uses techniques to manipulate and misguide its crawlers.
Incase you have lost a genuine site, all you can do is apply for inclusion again. So avoid tinkering with the Big Daddy before he gets serious about you.
Have a nice day!

I had noticed that for some of my sites, when I changed my site structure and content, some of my pages were de-listed and I also lost some rankings – but it was only for a short duration. My rankings returned after about 3-4 weeks.
Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write in my site something like that. Can I take part of your post to my blog?
@Mariann: Sorry. At the moment you cannot copy any content from this blog. But you are free to refer/trackback to this post.
