Web designer also make great SEO experts, but not all. That brings me to my topic. Is your Blog Title using H1 Header Tag?
Most designers encompasses the title within the Header H1 tag, but still however I would insist you to make a double check. I have found cases where some free WordPress themes were using as low as H4 Header tag for their Title.
How to make the check?
The page to find the content we are looking for varies from theme to theme. However, in you theme directory you will have something similar to following pages where you can hunt down and make changes.
Single.php – For displaying single posts
Full-post.php – For displaying full post on front page
Excerpts.php – For displaying excerpts on your front page
There might be other pages also you need to check out depending your theme structure.
Open the page in a text editor like Notepad++, and hunt down something which looks like this
<h2 class=”post-title”>
<a href=”<?php the_permalink(); ?>” title=”<?php the_title(); ?>”><?php the_title(); ?></a>
</h2>
Replace H1 with H2 (this might be H3 or H4 also). No rocket science but often ignored.
Proper Header tags usage on your Blog
Let us visualize in the following example, how your header tags should be used optimally.
This is a demo Header H1 tag
This is a very crucial tag from SEO perspective. Make sure your Blog Title uses this Tag and not H2 or H3. Header tags are used by Search Engines to distribute importance among the various elements of your page.
This is a demo Header H2 tag
If our post can be broken down in parts, make sure you use H2 Header tags to bring out the Important sections of the post.
This are demo Header H3 tag
H3 Header tag should highlight subsections of the post. Beyond H3 we normally do not need Header tag unless you have a very very lengthy post. However you can use Header Tag H4, H5 and H6
Other aspects to consider
Bold text should be used to highlight important points in text, such as main keywords. Italics does not adds weight from Search Engine Perspective but can be very useful to cite examples. If you wish to highlight something, you can use underline or blockquote for the same. This tips look very simple and child’s play but believe me, they are often ignored. And you end up paying dollars to a SEO expert for making these petty changes.

Interesting article! I have just checked my own blog title and it is using tags instead of H1. I thought that was the good way of presenting titles. Or shall I use H1 instead?

Thanks for the tips. Only problem was I couldn’t seam to make the font smaller in my style sheets. They were just too big. Trying to figure out why the font size wouldn’t adjust.
I`m using wp e-commerce now. All the products are displayed in “products page”. While ordinary post displayed in “homepage”.
The problem is if I use h1 tag for all my post title and product title, the products page will changed to h1 tag too. So if the product title displayed, there will be two item using h1 tag; my “product page” and “product title”.
Is it a problem for SEO having two h1 tag in the same page ?
I use Firebig on Firefox to do such checks. Load one of your pages and inspect with Firebug

You do not want your header to be H1 on every page, only on your index page do you want your site header to be H1 or maybe in the category pages too.
You should have your individual posts titles as H1 on those pages with your site title as h2 and your tagline as h3.
Why? Well this allows you to target long tail keywords aka phrases rather than one or two words, plus your h1 tag is supposed to describe the content on the page and on your individual posts the post title will do a much better job than your site title, therefore the content is more relevant and google will no doubt be much happier with you.
Thank you great post. It is handy and i change it.
