It shows you the recently visited Sites, Recent Bookmarks, Recently closed Tabs, Ability to search your History and Show full history.

However not most of us use it to the full advantage. Here is a quick tutorial to show you how Google New Tab Page works and how you can use it to work more faster. Interestingly, did you know that by looking at the recent thumbnails you can easily spot if someone else has used your computer? Pretty kiddish and no need to go to History page to see that.
